Is Health License The Only Reason Behind The Hutting Of 43 Mcdonald Outlets?
Thursday newspaper came with a
shock to the north Indians with the news about its favourite fast food chain
shutting down 43 out of its 53 outlets. The news came out after some
disagreements in CPRL i.e. the Connaught Plaza Restaurants, the joint venture of
the US- headquarters McDonald’s and Vikram Bakshi that operates the fast food
chain in north and east India. CPRL currently operates 168 restaurants, its
former managing director said that it is really unfortunate that operations of
43 restaurants had to be suspended.
According to Nirmal Singh Lotus Greens’ sources, the closing is done due to the
failure to get the mandatory regulatory health licenses renewed because of the
rift between Bakshi and McDonald’s. This step has left around 1,700 employees
jobless.
McDonald’s currently has more
than 400 franchises across 65 Indian cities and the countries escalating middle
class has been a huge hand in the growth and success of the franchise in the
country and would prove beneficial for the growth in Asia.
Bakshi has been in a debate with
McDonald’s since August 2013. The two have been in a protracted legal fight and
the latter has been pursuing arbitration in the London Court of International
Arbitration. There has been no fights with Westlife Development Ltd, master
rights owner for the West and South India operations of McDonald’s which runs
total 242 restaurants.
The revenue growth of CPRL fell
drastically in the year 2014-2015. After the issue, Bakshi would no longer
remain the managing director of the venture. Sources at Nirmal Singh Lotus Green said that Bakshi claims that he is being
framed in the scenario and all the efforts to remove him from his position are
most probably because of his objective to buy the company stakes at a cheaper
price.
The sudden shutting down of the
venture has unsettled a lot of people who are a regular visitor at the
McDonalds. There are still a lot of unanswered questions for them, and has raised
a doubt in the minds of all of them regarding the quality of the food being
served at the fast food outlets.
McDonald’s is a very popular
option for the young generation, especially the ones living away from home.
They offer quick delivery and have outlets at reasonable distances which makes
them the safest option for them when they are hungry and cannot order expensive
food. But this temporary shut-down has left them with no choice but to hop on
to some other option.
