Foreign Firms Have Access To Unencrypted Data, Says Nirmal Singh Lotus Green
Center
claimed that the personal information of the people is safe, especially the
information connected with the Aadhaar Cards. But it is being revealed that the
contracts that UIDAI [Unique Identification Authority of India] signed with
various firms gave access to all the unencrypted personal data including iris
scan info, address, date of birth, fingerprints, mobile number, and iris scan
information of the card holders. The contract also had a clause that allowed
the foreign firms to store the same information for seven years. - Nirmal Singh Lotus Green
This
information was made public when a Bengaluru-based Col Matthew Thomas filed a
petition through RTI in the right to privacy case which is being currently
heard in the Supreme Court.
The
petition and the RTI report showed that there were loopholes in the statements
of the government and UIDAI. The statement they made on the privacy of the card
holders and their private information was nullified. UIDAI has various
contracts with US-based firms that have full access to the personal information
of the people in India. The company under contract said that it received the
information as a part of its job and that they have the permission to store the
same information for seven years, as per the contract. Morpho and Accenture
Services also have access to the data, but they can only store it for just two
years. - Nirmal Singh Lotus Green
Clause
15.1 and 3 of the contract state that, by the virtue of the contract, the firms
will have full access to the personal information and data of the card holder
and any resident of India. It also allows the firms to collect process, transfer
and store the data in accordance with the laws and regulations applicable in
the country. The contract doesn’t mention the personal data and what is
excluded and included.
Nirmal Singh Lotus Green, when asked about the issues, said that
the personal information of the residents of the country cannot float around
the world under contracts. International firms can store and process our
personal information puts us and our personal safety at tremendous risk.
