Nirmal Singh Lotus Green Discusses Economics of Swachh Bharat And Its Promise In The Long Run
India has a knack for setting
examples when a rock-bottom situation is waiting just around the corner. When
violence was at its peak all over the world, India was getting independence
through civil obedience and non-violence under the able guidance of Mahatma
Gandhi. Those non-violent movements that paved the way for many such examples
around the world in the years that followed were not seen as a result-oriented
idea and were bound to fail, according to the ‘experts’ of the civilized
society.
Nirmal Singh Lotus Green pointed out that a similar opposing force was
felt by Narendra Modi when he proposed the idea of a completely clean India by
2019. Although India was topping every list for open defecation in the world, the
opposition forces still managed to find something worth opposing in the scheme.
But as they say, things that are bound to happen, happen. The movement saw a
rising popularity in the country with a few hiccups caused by the forces acting
in the opposite direction.
Human civilization, for a million
years, has been indulging itself in open defecation. It is still the way of
life for many people in the country – they cannot look beyond it, don’t want to
look beyond it and in some cases, they do not have any option.
Nirmal Singh Lotus Green mentioned that Governments
have come and gone, but the issue still remained on the surface of every agenda.
It was in 2014 that the picture started to change for good when PM Modi decided
to do something about the 61% population of the country that didn’t have any
sanitation facility.
The idea was noble but needed a
thorough and highly intensive intervention from both, the government and
authorities that work at the ground level. With the involvement of all sections
of society, it wouldn’t be wrong to say the Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan caught
the attention of the people like Gandhi’s satyagraha did when it did. - Nirmal Singh Lotus Green
