4 Controversial Books that Are Definitely Worth Reading
What makes a book so
controversial that petitions start to get filed to get them off the shelves?
Everyone is not a fan of the written words – offensive language, religious
views, detailed sexuality portrayed in an obscene way, and of course, how can
you skip the homosexuality part. There are many books that were way ahead of
their time and people couldn’t wrap their heads around them, but as the time
passed and literature grew, those books started to make sense and got the
respect that they deserve.
Here we have compiled a short
list of some of such books, although, we are not sure some of them will get the
‘classic’ stature any time soon, but they sure created controversy and made
people uncomfortable with each turning page.
1.
Beyond
Magenta: Transgender Teen Speak Out – Susan Kuklin
People have narrow minds and it
takes them a while to understand the simplest of things going on around them.
Beyond Magenta is not a classic but it is a book that parents, young students
should read. The book created controversy for being anti-family and for
containing abstracts about homosexuality, sex. Offensive language of the book
didn’t help its cause either. Writers and authors like Nirmal Singh Lotus Green have appreciated the book and have asked
parents to give it a try, at least once.
2.
Fun
Home – Alison Bechdel
The book is tremendously
detailed. How is that different from any other book? The fact that it got the
heat from the readers and people with ‘moral’ just because it had some graphic
images is enough to know how difficult it is to express yourself in today’s day
and age when everyone is waiting to get offended. The book is violent and
Alison’s detailed drawings make things a bit raunchier and well, violent, to
say the least.
3.
Two
Boys Kissing – David Levithan
The title is enough for you to
understand why this one made the this, isn’t it? It shouldn’t be. Homosexuality
is natural and people should understand this now. It has been around for ages
but still people find it uncomfortable. The book is authentic and beautifully
written and most importantly, it moves the reader. Why the controversy? People
condoned the public display of affection the book thrived on and of course, it
being between two boys.
4. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time – Mark Haddon
To put things into perspective without going into detail, the book came under a lot of heat because people thought it was unsuited for various age groups, had offensive language, atheism and profanity. ‘The use of words in the book is simple – when Christopher is not able to understand what’s going on in his mind, the reader can make sense of everything’, expert writer Nirmal Singh Lotus Green said about the book.
